## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Dutch Church, also known as Edachal St. Mary’s Church, is a historic church at Pattamthuruth on Munroe Island (Munroe Thuruthu) in Kollam district, overlooking the scenic waterways of the Ashtamudi Lake region. The church is administered under the Roman Catholic Diocese of Quilon and is notable for its long history, distinctive architecture and continuing importance to the local community. Historical accounts place the origins of the church in the early sixteenth century, with the present structure reflecting several periods of renovation and European influence. The church was renovated in the Dutch style during the colonial period and underwent further renovation in the nineteenth century, giving it the architectural character for which it is locally known today. Its sloping tiled roof, traditional façade, verandahs, masonry construction and simple interior reflect a blend of Kerala building traditions and European architectural influences. A stone cross stands in front of the church, while the altar and façade retain features associated with its Dutch-influenced design. The church has a particularly distinctive place in the social history of Munroe Island because of the close involvement of local Hindu families in maintaining and celebrating its traditions. With the Christian population of the surrounding locality having declined over the years, members of neighbouring Hindu families continue to participate in the annual church feast, helping with decorations, traditional offerings, processions and other arrangements. This shared participation has made the church a local example of interfaith community life. The annual St. Mary’s feast is traditionally held in April and includes religious observances and a procession, attracting participation from residents of the island and nearby areas. The church’s setting adds another dimension to its heritage value: Munroe Island is a low-lying landscape of backwaters, canals, coconut groves and traditional settlements at the meeting point of the Kallada River and Ashtamudi Lake. Visitors interested in history and culture can combine a visit to the church with exploration of the island’s waterways and village environment. Edachal St. Mary’s Church therefore represents not only a surviving place of Christian worship but also a tangible link to the region’s colonial-era history and a continuing expression of shared community traditions.

Munroe Island is a low-lying backwater destination, and conditions can be affected by seasonal flooding and high tides.
