DESCRIPTION:Dutch Church\, also known as Edachal St. Mary’s Church\, is a
  historic church at Pattamthuruth on Munroe Island (Munroe Thuruthu) in Ko
 llam district\, overlooking the scenic waterways of the Ashtamudi Lake reg
 ion. The church is administered under the Roman Catholic Diocese of Quilon
  and is notable for its long history\, distinctive architecture and contin
 uing importance to the local community. Historical accounts place the orig
 ins of the church in the early sixteenth century\, with the present struct
 ure reflecting several periods of renovation and European influence. The c
 hurch was renovated in the Dutch style during the colonial period and unde
 rwent further renovation in the nineteenth century\, giving it the archite
 ctural character for which it is locally known today. Its sloping tiled ro
 of\, traditional façade\, verandahs\, masonry construction and simple int
 erior reflect a blend of Kerala building traditions and European architect
 ural influences. A stone cross stands in front of the church\, while the a
 ltar and façade retain features associated with its Dutch-influenced desi
 gn. The church has a particularly distinctive place in the social history 
 of Munroe Island because of the close involvement of local Hindu families 
 in maintaining and celebrating its traditions. With the Christian populati
 on of the surrounding locality having declined over the years\, members of
  neighbouring Hindu families continue to participate in the annual church
