About this place

The Durbar Hall Art Gallery is one of Kochi's most prominent public art galleries and a significant cultural landmark managed by the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi, the state's premier institution for the promotion of visual arts. Located on Durbar Hall Road, Ernakulam South, opposite TDM Hall and close to Ernakulam Junction (South) Railway Station, the gallery occupies the historic Durbar Hall, a heritage building that has been adapted into a contemporary exhibition venue while preserving its architectural character. Unlike a conventional museum with permanent collections, Durbar Hall Art Gallery functions as a dynamic exhibition space where displays change regularly throughout the year, providing visitors with fresh opportunities to experience contemporary painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, installation art, and mixed-media works by artists from Kerala and across India. The gallery hosts a wide variety of solo exhibitions, retrospective showcases, student exhibitions, group presentations, art camps, and curated thematic displays, making it an important platform for both established and emerging artists. Recent exhibitions have included "SCRIPT," a contemporary visual arts exhibition, along with numerous independent and Akademi-supported showcases that reflect evolving trends in modern Indian art. In addition to exhibitions, the gallery frequently serves as a venue for artist interactions, workshops, seminars, cultural discussions, and educational programmes organized by the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi, encouraging greater public engagement with the visual arts. Its central location in Ernakulam makes it easily accessible to residents, students, researchers, tourists, and art enthusiasts exploring Kochi's cultural attractions, while its proximity to major transport hubs further enhances visitor convenience. The gallery also plays an important role during citywide cultural initiatives, complementing events such as the Kochi-Muziris Biennale by providing an established public exhibition space on the Ernakulam mainland. Visitors can appreciate a constantly changing collection of artworks representing diverse artistic styles, techniques, and perspectives, ensuring that each visit offers a different experience. According to the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi, the gallery is generally open Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, remains closed on Mondays, and admission is free, making it one of Kochi's most accessible destinations for experiencing contemporary visual art. Exhibition schedules, participating artists, event calendars, workshops, and visitor information are announced by the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi for each exhibition and cultural programme.
