About this place

The Ernakulam Revenue District School Kalolsavam is the premier annual district-level school arts festival in Ernakulam district and forms an integral part of Kerala's renowned School Kalolsavam system, one of the largest student cultural festivals in Asia. Conducted by the General Education Department, the festival brings together talented students who qualify through sub-district competitions to compete at the revenue district level in a wide range of performing arts, literary, and cultural disciplines. Serving as a major platform for nurturing artistic excellence among school students, the Kalolsavam celebrates Kerala's rich cultural heritage while encouraging creativity, healthy competition, and the preservation of traditional and contemporary art forms. The festival is typically held over five days during late November, with competitions conducted simultaneously across multiple venues. The 2025–26 Ernakulam Revenue District School Kalolsavam was held from 25 to 29 November 2025, featuring 301 competition items across 16 stages hosted by schools in Ernakulam. The event attracted nearly 10,000 student performers, with more than 11,000 participants, including teachers, officials, organizers, and team managers, making it one of the district's largest educational and cultural gatherings. Participants compete in an extensive range of on-stage and off-stage events that include classical dance forms such as Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Kuchipudi, and Kathakali, alongside folk dances, music competitions, drama, mono act, mimicry, recitation, painting, and numerous literary contests conducted in Malayalam, English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Arabic, and other language categories. The festival reflects Kerala's cultural diversity by accommodating specialized programmes such as Arabic Kalolsavam and Sanskrit Kalolsavam, ensuring that linguistic and cultural traditions receive equal recognition within the school arts framework. Students earn their place in the district festival by securing top positions in their respective sub-district competitions, and winners at the revenue district level qualify to represent Ernakulam at the prestigious Kerala State School Kalolsavam, where they compete against the finest student artists from across the state. Beyond competition, the festival provides an invaluable opportunity for students to develop confidence, discipline, teamwork, communication skills, and artistic expression while interacting with peers from different educational institutions and cultural backgrounds. Teachers, judges, parents, and cultural practitioners collectively contribute to maintaining the high standards for which Kerala's School Kalolsavam is nationally recognized. The event also strengthens the district's cultural identity by preserving traditional art forms and encouraging younger generations to participate in Kerala's vibrant performing arts heritage. Alongside the Revenue District School Kalolsavam, Ernakulam hosts several major public literary and cultural festivals, including the Manorama Hortus Art and Literature Festival in Kochi, which features author interactions, panel discussions, workshops, music, and artistic performances, and the Kochi Theatre Festival, an annual celebration of theatre, cinema, and cultural dialogue organized at venues such as the Chavara Cultural Centre. Together, these events reinforce Ernakulam's position as one of Kerala's leading centres for arts, literature, education, and cultural tourism. Official schedules, venues, competition items, eligibility criteria, participant guidelines, judging procedures, and result announcements for each edition of the Ernakulam Revenue District School Kalolsavam are published by the General Education Department and the organizing district authorities.
