Cycling Expedition Pathanapuram is a multi-day bicycle journey that starts on the road through Pathanapuram, the Kollam town north of Punalur. It is a journey across more than one day. It is not an evening loop that ends before dark, and it is not the monthly ride that meets at the Thenmala visitors centre. You leave with the idea of being away from home.

The same rider stays with the same bicycle. Kit is whatever the days away from home require: a change of clothes, a way to deal with a puncture, water, and food. Nights might be in camp, in a lodge, or back in Pathanapuram if the ride is a series of day loops. That choice belongs to the people leading the ride. No support van is promised. Some expeditions follow with a vehicle that carries bags and can pick up a rider who has to stop. Others are self-supported, and the bicycle carries everything. Until the leader says which of those you are joining, pack as if you have to carry your own kit.

No route is fixed in advance. The wheels might stay near Pathanapuram, turn toward Punalur, or leave Kollam. Hills toward the east, the road south to the coast, or a loop through nearby villages are all possible until a map is published. Do not draw a line on a phone and call it the expedition. The distance of each day, the hills, and the place you sleep are part of the plan you have to ask for.

December is the season for the expedition. December is a month, not a start gun on the first morning. Rain in the hills, a wedding on the road, or a small group can change the week. There is no published entry fee and no club name.

Kallumkadavu is the town bus stand, under a kilometre from the centre of Pathanapuram. It is how buses serve the town. It is not the start line. Punalur railway station is about 15 kilometres away. Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is about 89 kilometres away. Rooms named for Pathanapuram are Andrea Regency, Fathima Residency, and Hotel Palazhi. A night before the ride in one of them is your own booking. It is not the expedition camp, unless the leaders are using that hotel and have told you so.

December gives you a month in which to find the people leading the ride. It does not give you a morning. When you find them, write down four things: the day, the exact point on the road, the number of days, and whether a vehicle is following. Self-supported means the bicycle carries the kit, including a way to deal with a puncture. Kallumkadavu is the bus stand, under a kilometre from the centre, and a sensible place to arrive in town. It is a poor place to wait with a loaded bicycle if the start is somewhere else. Andrea Regency, Fathima Residency, and Hotel Palazhi are rooms for the night before, if you book them yourself. They are the camp only when the leaders say they are.

An evening loop that ends before dark is a different ride. This one keeps you out overnight in whatever form the leaders chose: camp, lodge, or a return to town between days. Until that form is clear, do not buy kit for a version of the trip nobody has described. No route out of the district is promised, and none is ruled out.

Ask whoever is holding the ride for the morning, the exact point on the road, the number of days, the route, and what riders must carry. If nobody can answer those questions, the expedition is not yet a trip you can join.
