Contemporary Art Shows at Kerala Lalithakala Akademi Art Gallery

About this place

The Kerala Lalithakala Akademi is Kerala's premier autonomous institution dedicated to the promotion, preservation, and development of visual arts, playing a vital role in nurturing artists, encouraging artistic innovation, and fostering public appreciation for fine arts across the state. Established by the Government of Kerala, the Akademi serves as a central platform for painters, sculptors, printmakers, photographers, installation artists, and multidisciplinary creative practitioners through exhibitions, artist camps, workshops, seminars, publications, awards, and educational programmes. Headquartered in Thrissur, the Akademi operates an extensive network of regional art galleries and exhibition spaces, including the renowned Durbar Hall Art Centre in Kochi and regional galleries located in Kozhikode, Thalassery, and Payyannur, making contemporary art accessible to audiences throughout Kerala. Among these venues, the historic Durbar Hall Art Centre is recognized as the Akademi's flagship exhibition space, regularly hosting large-scale contemporary art exhibitions, retrospectives, solo exhibitions, thematic showcases, and national-level projects that attract artists, scholars, students, collectors, and art enthusiasts from across India. The Akademi's galleries collectively present a diverse spectrum of artistic practices encompassing painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, mixed media, installation art, digital art, conceptual works, and experimental visual expressions, reflecting both traditional artistic heritage and contemporary creative exploration. Through its year-round exhibition programme, the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi provides emerging and established artists with opportunities to exhibit their works in professionally curated environments while encouraging meaningful dialogue between artists and the public. The institution also supports artistic research, critical discourse, and interdisciplinary collaborations by organizing lectures, artist interactions, workshops, and educational initiatives that strengthen Kerala's vibrant visual arts community. Recent exhibition programmes have demonstrated the Akademi's continued commitment to showcasing diverse artistic perspectives through carefully curated projects. Contemporary group exhibitions, thematic presentations, solo artist showcases, and retrospectives regularly explore subjects ranging from identity, culture, environment, history, social change, and political expression to experimental visual practices and new media. Notable exhibitions have included Script – On Going Process, a contemporary group exhibition presented at the Durbar Hall Art Gallery; Where Earth Meets Velvet, a solo painting exhibition by artist Sujith S. N. curated by R. B. Shajith at the Kozhikode gallery; and RADICAL, a major exhibition celebrating the legacy of the Indian Radical Painters and Sculptors Association through works by influential artists including the late K. P. Krishnakumar and Alex Mathew Prabhakaran. The Akademi also continues to encourage emerging artistic voices through its Contemporary Art Exhibition Project, under which curated exhibitions featuring new generations of artists are organized at its galleries across the state. These initiatives reflect the institution's ongoing mission to promote innovation while preserving the rich artistic traditions that have shaped Kerala's modern visual culture. Beyond exhibitions, the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi plays a significant role in documenting artistic heritage, recognizing excellence through awards and fellowships, supporting artist residencies, publishing research and catalogues, and creating opportunities for cultural exchange between artists from different regions of India and abroad. Its galleries serve as welcoming public spaces where visitors can experience original artworks, engage with contemporary artistic ideas, and gain deeper insight into the evolution of Indian visual arts. As exhibitions rotate throughout the year, every visit offers new artistic experiences and fresh perspectives on contemporary creativity. Official schedules, exhibition dates, participating artists, workshops, seminars, awards, artist camps, visitor timings, and special cultural programmes are announced by the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi through its official communication channels for each exhibition season, allowing visitors, artists, researchers, and art enthusiasts to stay informed about upcoming events and activities across its galleries and exhibition venues throughout Kerala.
