About this event
Christ the King Church at Kayyar in Kasaragod district is a Roman Catholic parish under the Diocese of Mangalore and serves the Catholic community of Kayyar and neighbouring areas. The parish is located in Paivalike Panchayat near Uppala and has an established place in the religious and community life of the region. The church’s patron is Christ the King, and its annual feast has traditionally been observed in January, with the third Wednesday of January recorded as the feast day in parish listings. The annual celebration brings together parishioners and clergy for Holy Mass and other devotional observances, while community programmes and gatherings have also formed part of the parish’s activities. A documented annual feast in January 2022 included a solemn Eucharistic celebration and a procession of the Blessed Sacrament, while the parish’s annual-day programme in November 2023 featured Holy Mass, a Eucharistic procession, a stage programme and the inauguration of a new church project. The parish has undergone a major transition in recent years. A foundation stone for a new church building was laid in January 2025, and construction has been progressing at a new designated site. In January 2026, the new priests’ office, residence and parish hall were inaugurated and blessed by the Bishop of Mangalore, while construction of the new church building continued. The former church building, constructed in the 1950s and inaugurated in 1956, was subsequently demolished in February 2026 following the parish’s decision to proceed with the new church project. Religious functions were arranged in the parish’s mini hall during the transition. Consequently, the historic former church building should no longer be described as a current architectural attraction. The parish nevertheless remains an active religious institution, with Holy Mass, pastoral ministry, community activities and charitable initiatives continuing under the Diocese of Mangalore. Recent parish activities have included community celebrations, youth and cultural programmes, Christmas outreach and assistance to families through housing projects. For visitors interested in the Christian heritage and contemporary parish life of northern Kerala, Kayyar provides an opportunity to observe the continuing religious traditions of a Catholic community while witnessing the development of a new parish church complex.
