About this place
Kerala Pazhani Temple is the Chocherikunnu Sree Subrahmanya Temple at Cherukunnu, Puthur, Thrissur, Kerala 680014. Devotees know it as Kerala Pazhani because the worship here follows the Murugan tradition of Palani in Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity is Lord Subrahmanya, also called Murugan and Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. At this shrine he is worshipped in the form of a serpent, at the foot of Kumaragiri.
The temple account links the place to the Skanda Mahatmya. It says Lord Subrahmanya left his usual form and wandered the hills and forests until he came to Chocherikunnu. Goddess Parvati is believed to have done penance here so that her son would return to his original form. At the end of that penance he appeared before her as a serpent, with the other gods, and regained his form when Maha Vishnu touched him. Swami Chinmayananda later consecrated Lord Subrahmanya at this spot, and the hill shrine came to be called Kerala Pazhani.
The temple stands on Chocherikunnu. Visitors reach it by steps or by a short hill road, and the rise opens a view over the Puthur side of Thrissur. A first visit is easiest in the morning, when abhishekam and the head-shaving offering are taken up, or in the evening for deeparadhana. The path can be damp in the monsoon, so a slow walk on the steps is the safer way up.
A published timetable opens the temple at 5:30 a.m., with abhishekam at 6:00 a.m., usha pooja at 6:30 a.m., and ucha pooja at 8:30 a.m. The morning close is listed around 10:00 a.m., and some boards keep Sunday morning open until about 11:30 a.m. The temple reopens at 5:30 p.m., with deeparadhana at 6:30 p.m. and athazha pooja at 7:00 p.m., and closes at 7:30 p.m. Confirm the day’s hours before you travel.
Offerings that mark this temple include kavadi, Shashti pooja, sarppa pooja, Ayilya pooja, and noorum palum, which are made for the serpent form of the Lord. Panchamrutha abhishekam, palabhishekam, Kumara Sooktha pushpanjali, and the offering of a swarna vel are also listed. Head shaving is a morning vazhipadu that devotees associate with this Kerala Pazhani, in the same spirit as Palani. The slot, the dress rule, and the current offering rates should be checked at the temple. A phone number in circulation for the shrine is 97448 87878.
Shashti, the sixth day of the lunar fortnight, is the regular day for special worship of Lord Murugan. Devotees observe Shashti viratham with fasting and extra pooja. Kavadi is offered through the year, with larger crowds on festival Shashti days. The exact programme for each month is announced at the temple.
Other shrines also carry the name Kerala Pazhani. Eruthavoor Balasubrahmanya Temple is at Balaramapuram in Thiruvananthapuram, and Thayamkulangara Sree Subramanya Temple is at Cherpu. This description is for the Chocherikunnu temple at Puthur.
