DESCRIPTION:Chitralekha Film Society occupies an important place in the his
tory of Kerala’s film and cultural movements. Established in Thiruvanant
hapuram in 1965 under the leadership of filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan and
cultural figures including Kulathoor Bhaskaran Nair\, the society helped
introduce audiences in Kerala to serious Indian and international cinema a
t a time when access to such films was limited. Its activities centred on
regular film screenings\, film appreciation\, discussions and cultural eng
agement\, creating a community of viewers interested in cinema as an artis
tic and social medium. Chitralekha’s early screenings included films fro
m different parts of the world\, and the organisation used venues such as
the YMCA hall and Tagore Centenary Hall for its programmes. Its work contr
ibuted to the growth of the film-society movement in Kerala and encouraged
  a generation of filmmakers\, writers\, critics\, students and cinephiles
to engage with cinema beyond mainstream commercial entertainment. The orga
nisation was also closely associated with the emergence of Malayalam paral
lel cinema. Through the Chitralekha Film Cooperative\, it supported the pr
oduction and distribution of significant films\, including Adoor Gopalakri
shnan’s Swayamvaram and Kodiyettam\, which received major national recog
nition. The wider Chitralekha movement brought together filmmakers\, actor
s\, writers\, artists and film enthusiasts and became part of the cultural
environment that shaped Kerala’s modern cinema.…\n\nEvent page: https
