About this place

Cheraman Juma Masjid in Methala, Kodungallur, is widely recognized by Kerala Tourism and the Government of Kerala as India’s first mosque, traditionally dated to 629 CE and associated with Malik Ibn Dinar. The mosque occupies an important place in Kerala’s religious and maritime history, reflecting the long-standing connections between the Malabar Coast and Arab traders who travelled to the region for commerce. According to tradition, the mosque was established during the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad following the story of Cheraman Perumal, a Chera ruler who is said to have travelled to Arabia and embraced Islam. The Cheraman Perumal narrative remains part of the mosque’s rich cultural tradition, while the site itself continues to function as a place of worship. Its architecture is particularly distinctive, combining elements of traditional Kerala building design with influences associated with Islamic architecture. The present complex has undergone several renovations over the centuries, including significant changes in the 20th century, while important interior elements such as the wooden steps and ceiling have been retained. An ancient oil lamp inside the mosque is another notable feature and is traditionally believed to have been kept burning for centuries; devotees from different communities have long regarded it with reverence. The mosque is also part of the Muziris Heritage Project, which highlights Kodungallur’s significance as an ancient centre of maritime trade and cultural exchange. The complex includes Kerala’s first Islamic Heritage Museum, where information panels, visual presentations, murals, paintings, and exhibits explore the history of Islam in Kerala, the Cheraman Perumal tradition, and the historical role of Kodungallur. The site therefore offers more than a religious experience: it provides an opportunity to understand the layered cultural history of the Malabar Coast, where trade, migration, faith, and local traditions have interacted for centuries. Visitors should approach the mosque as an active place of worship and observe appropriate dress and conduct while exploring its heritage significance.
