## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Cherai Pooram is the principal annual festival of Sree Gowreeswara Temple at Cherai on Vypin Island in Ernakulam district and is one of the notable temple celebrations in the coastal region of central Kerala. The temple is dedicated primarily to Lord Subrahmanya, also known as Murugan, and is popularly associated with the name Gowreeswara. The shrine is distinctive for its four-faced temple arrangement, with the principal deity of Subrahmanya facing east and other deities including Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha associated with the other directions. The temple was consecrated by Sree Narayana Guru in 1912 and is also known as South Pazhani. Cherai Pooram is held annually in the Malayalam month of Makaram, generally falling in January or February, and combines devotional observances with the traditional visual and musical elements of a Kerala temple festival. Special worship and offerings are conducted at the temple, while the festival programme includes the Kavadi Ghoshayatra associated with Lord Subrahmanya. One of the best-known features of the celebration is the Pooram procession, in which caparisoned elephants move around the temple accompanied by traditional percussion ensembles. Kerala Tourism documents the procession of decorated elephants accompanied by Panchavadyam and the participation of large numbers of devotees at the temple. The festival is therefore closely connected with the temple’s religious traditions rather than being simply a cultural spectacle. Cherai Pooram also reflects the long-standing community traditions associated with the temple and the wider Cherai area. The temple itself has historical importance in the social and religious history of Kerala because of its connection with Sree Narayana Guru and the principles associated with his reform movement. Vypin, where Cherai is situated, is a culturally diverse coastal island with temples, churches, fishing communities, beaches and other heritage sites forming part of its landscape. During the festival, the temple surroundings become a focal point for worshippers and visitors who come to witness the rituals, processions and traditional percussion performances. The exact sequence of ceremonies and festival programmes varies according to the temple’s annual arrangements and the Malayalam calendar. Visitors should respect temple customs and follow instructions issued by the temple authorities during crowded festival periods. Cherai Pooram offers an opportunity to experience a living temple tradition in which devotion, ritual, percussion and processional arts come together within the historic setting of Sree Gowreeswara Temple.
