DESCRIPTION:Cherai Pooram is the principal annual festival of Sree Gowreesw
 ara Temple at Cherai on Vypin Island in Ernakulam district and is one of t
 he notable temple celebrations in the coastal region of central Kerala. Th
 e temple is dedicated primarily to Lord Subrahmanya\, also known as Muruga
 n\, and is popularly associated with the name Gowreeswara. The shrine is d
 istinctive for its four-faced temple arrangement\, with the principal deit
 y of Subrahmanya facing east and other deities including Lord Shiva\, Godd
 ess Parvati and Lord Ganesha associated with the other directions. The tem
 ple was consecrated by Sree Narayana Guru in 1912 and is also known as Sou
 th Pazhani. Cherai Pooram is held annually in the Malayalam month of Makar
 am\, generally falling in January or February\, and combines devotional ob
 servances with the traditional visual and musical elements of a Kerala tem
 ple festival. Special worship and offerings are conducted at the temple\, 
 while the festival programme includes the Kavadi Ghoshayatra associated wi
 th Lord Subrahmanya. One of the best-known features of the celebration is 
 the Pooram procession\, in which caparisoned elephants move around the tem
 ple accompanied by traditional percussion ensembles. Kerala Tourism docume
 nts the procession of decorated elephants accompanied by Panchavadyam and 
 the participation of large numbers of devotees at the temple. The festival
