## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

The Chennamkary St. Joseph’s Syro-Malabar Catholic Church is one of the oldest and most historically significant Syrian Christian churches in the Kuttanad region of Alappuzha district, Kerala, located in the village of Chennamkary. Tradition holds that the first church here dates back to AD 977, making it one of the ancient centres of Christianity in central Travancore. It belongs to the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church (Eastern Catholic tradition) and is closely linked with the early migration and settlement of Saint Thomas Christians in the backwater regions. The church is especially famous as the baptism place of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara (1805), one of Kerala’s greatest saints and social reformers. It has played a major role in the religious and cultural life of Kuttanad, serving farming communities living among the canals and paddy fields. Over centuries, the church has been rebuilt and expanded, but it continues to preserve its ancient heritage, East Syrian liturgical traditions, and strong community identity, making it an important landmark in Kerala’s Christian heritage circuit.
