About this place
Chembra Peak, near Meppady in Wayanad, is the highest peak in the district, rising to about 2,100 metres above sea level in the Western Ghats. Known for its mountain landscapes and regulated trekking experience, the peak is surrounded by tea plantations, forests, open grasslands and rolling hills that reveal broad views across Wayanad. One of its most distinctive natural features is the heart-shaped lake on the trekking route, popularly known as Hridaya Saras. The perennial water body, which is traditionally believed to retain water even during dry periods, has become closely associated with Chembra and is a major attraction along the trail. The approach to the lake passes through the green slopes around the foothills, with changing scenery as cultivated landscapes give way to wilder mountain terrain. The combination of elevated grasslands, forested slopes and mist-covered hills creates a landscape characteristic of the higher reaches of the Wayanad hill ranges. Chembra is also noted for its natural vegetation and the biodiversity of the surrounding Western Ghats, making the area significant not only for recreation but also for nature appreciation. Trekking is conducted under Forest Department regulations, and visitors require prior permission to enter the designated trekking area. The official trekking programme includes a marked route and guidance, with access and operations subject to weather and other environmental conditions. The heart-shaped lake forms an important point on the route, while the mountain setting provides opportunities for landscape photography and quiet observation of the surrounding scenery. The trek is generally treated as a day activity, and conditions can change considerably with rainfall, mist and trail conditions. Visitors are expected to follow forest regulations, avoid littering and respect the natural environment. Chembra Peak therefore offers a combination of mountain scenery, a distinctive natural landmark and a regulated forest trekking experience, with its appeal centred on the landscape and the iconic heart-shaped lake rather than on facilities or commercial attractions.
