About this place
Chembra Peak in Wayanad is one of Kerala’s most celebrated trekking destinations, renowned for its high-altitude landscapes, panoramic Western Ghats views and the iconic heart-shaped lake known as Hridaya Saras. Rising to about 2,100 metres above sea level, Chembra is the highest peak in Wayanad district and lies near Meppadi, with Kalpetta serving as a convenient base for travellers. The trek begins through the picturesque tea plantations around the foothills before progressing through forested sections and open grasslands as the trail climbs higher into the mountain landscape. One of the most memorable sights along the route is Hridaya Saras, the heart-shaped natural pond situated roughly midway through the trek. Surrounded by green meadows and mountain scenery, the pond has become one of Wayanad’s most recognisable natural landmarks and a popular stopping point for trekkers and photographers. Beyond the lake, the trail continues towards higher sections of Chembra, offering increasingly expansive views of Wayanad’s valleys, hills and surrounding Western Ghats. On clear days, the elevated viewpoints provide impressive vistas across the landscape, while mist and clouds can create an atmospheric mountain experience. The region is rich in biodiversity, with forests, grasslands and tea plantations supporting a variety of plants, butterflies and birds. Trekkers may encounter species such as the Malabar whistling thrush and white-bellied treepie, adding an ecological dimension to the journey. The trek is generally considered moderately challenging and takes around three to four hours under favourable conditions, although the actual duration can vary with weather, trail conditions and the route followed. Chembra is a protected forest landscape, and trekking is regulated through the Forest Department, with permits and guided arrangements forming part of the eco-tourism experience. The trekking season is generally associated with favourable weather outside periods of heavy monsoon conditions, while access can change according to conservation and weather requirements. Travellers should carry sufficient water, wear sturdy footwear and follow eco-friendly practices throughout the trek. Accommodation is widely available in Kalpetta, Meppadi and surrounding areas, ranging from homestays and eco-resorts to hotels. For nature lovers, photographers and adventure travellers, Chembra Peak offers an appealing combination of mountain scenery, tea plantations, forest trails and the unforgettable Hridaya Saras. Its distinctive heart-shaped lake and panoramic Western Ghats setting make Chembra one of the most memorable trekking experiences in Wayanad.
