## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

The annual festival of Chelamattom Sree Krishna Swamy Temple is a traditional religious observance at the historic shrine in Chelamattom, near Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district. Situated on the banks of the Periyar River between Kalady and Perumbavoor, the temple is popularly known as Dakshina Kashi and is distinctive for its association with three incarnations of Lord Vishnu: Krishna, Narasimha and Vamana. The temple’s official history records that the present Krishna shrine developed from an older tradition associated with an image of Lord Krishna discovered in the Periyar and subsequently installed according to customary temple rituals. The annual Utsavam is held in the Malayalam month of Kumbham, generally corresponding to February or March, and forms an important part of the temple’s ritual calendar. The celebrations include special worship and traditional ceremonies, with the annual Arattu held on the day when the star Thiruvonam falls during Kumbham. According to the temple’s official account, the Arattu is preceded by Valiya Vilakku, during which the deity is ceremonially taken in procession on an elephant to the place associated with the temple’s earlier shrine, followed by rituals and poojas. The temple also maintains a range of regular and special offerings, including abhishekam, deeparadhana, Ganapathy Homam, annadanam and ancestral rites. Chelamattom is particularly known for Vavu Namaskaram, a one-day observance held during Karkidakam and described by the temple as its most important festival. This tradition of ancestral offering is an important reason for the shrine’s popular association with Dakshina Kashi. The temple complex itself features traditional architectural elements, including stone carvings and bronze deepastambhams, while its location beside the Periyar gives the pilgrimage setting a distinctive riverine character. Festival programmes can include ceremonial processions and traditional temple activities, although the exact schedule and cultural components vary from year to year. Visitors attending the Utsavam should regard the temple primarily as an active place of worship and follow its customs concerning dress, access and participation in rituals. The annual celebrations offer an opportunity to experience the devotional traditions of central Kerala in a historic temple setting, while the surrounding river landscape and the temple’s distinctive Vishnu traditions add to its cultural significance.
