DESCRIPTION:The annual festival of Chelamattom Sree Krishna Swamy Temple is
  a traditional religious observance at the historic shrine in Chelamattom\
 , near Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district. Situated on the banks of the Per
 iyar River between Kalady and Perumbavoor\, the temple is popularly known 
 as Dakshina Kashi and is distinctive for its association with three incarn
 ations of Lord Vishnu: Krishna\, Narasimha and Vamana. The temple’s offi
 cial history records that the present Krishna shrine developed from an old
 er tradition associated with an image of Lord Krishna discovered in the Pe
 riyar and subsequently installed according to customary temple rituals. Th
 e annual Utsavam is held in the Malayalam month of Kumbham\, generally cor
 responding to February or March\, and forms an important part of the templ
 e’s ritual calendar. The celebrations include special worship and tradit
 ional ceremonies\, with the annual Arattu held on the day when the star Th
 iruvonam falls during Kumbham. According to the temple’s official accoun
 t\, the Arattu is preceded by Valiya Vilakku\, during which the deity is c
 eremonially taken in procession on an elephant to the place associated wit
 h the temple’s earlier shrine\, followed by rituals and poojas. The temp
 le also maintains a range of regular and special offerings\, including abh
 ishekam\, deeparadhana\, Ganapathy Homam\, annadanam and ancestral rites.
