Chandragiri Fort is a historic riverside fort located on the southern bank of the Chandragiri River in Kasaragod district, Kerala, approximately 4 km south of Kasaragod town. Built in 1701 CE by Keladi Basappa Nayaka of the Keladi Nayaka Kingdom, the fort served as an important military outpost to safeguard the northern frontier of the kingdom and oversee trade and maritime activities along the Chandragiri River and the Arabian Sea coast. Spread across a hilltop overlooking the river estuary, the laterite fort is known for its sturdy ramparts, bastions, and commanding location, offering visitors panoramic views of the Chandragiri River, nearby backwaters, and the Arabian Sea. Although much of the original structure has weathered over time, the remaining fortifications provide valuable insight into the military architecture of the early eighteenth century and the historical significance of Kasaragod as a strategic coastal region. Today, Chandragiri Fort is maintained as a protected heritage monument and is one of the most visited historical attractions in northern Kerala. Visitors can explore the fort grounds, walk along the ancient walls, admire the scenic riverfront, and enjoy spectacular sunset views that have made the fort a favorite destination for photographers and sightseeing enthusiasts. The peaceful surroundings, landscaped pathways, and elevated viewpoints create an ideal setting for family outings, heritage walks, and cultural exploration. The best time to visit is between October and March, when the weather is pleasant and visibility is excellent for enjoying the river and coastal scenery. Easily accessible by road from Kasaragod, Chandragiri Fort is often included in itineraries covering nearby attractions such as Bekal Fort, Bekal Beach, and the Chandragiri River. With its historical importance, impressive laterite architecture, and breathtaking riverside setting, Chandragiri Fort remains one of Kerala's most significant heritage landmarks and an essential destination for travelers interested in history, architecture, and the natural beauty of Kasaragod district.
