## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Calvary Mount, also known locally as Kalliyanathandu, is a hilltop viewpoint and Christian pilgrimage centre in Idukki district, offering expansive views of the Idukki reservoir and the surrounding high-range landscape. The elevated site combines scenic appeal with religious significance and is particularly associated with the Way of the Cross observed by pilgrims during Lent. The approach follows a winding hill road through the green terrain of the Idukki high ranges, with plantation areas and vegetation appearing along the slopes. At the hilltop, walking paths and viewing areas open towards the reservoir, where the water winds between forested hills and the distinctive Kuravan and Kurathi hill formations. The Idukki Arch Dam can also be seen in the wider panorama, adding a notable engineering landmark to the natural setting. The landscape changes considerably with weather and light. On clear days, the reservoir and layered hills are visible across a broad distance, while mist and low clouds can soften the outlines of the distant terrain and create an atmospheric highland setting. The ridge around the viewpoint provides opportunities for short walks and quiet observation of the surrounding landscape. During Lent, the hill takes on a distinctly devotional character as pilgrims make their ascent along the Way of the Cross, combining prayer and reflection with the natural surroundings. Outside the pilgrimage season, the site is also visited as a scenic destination by travellers interested in Idukki’s reservoir landscape and mountain views. Calvary Mount is reached by road, followed by walking along the hilltop paths and viewing areas. Its setting makes it suitable for a leisurely visit rather than requiring an extended trek, although the approach road is steep and visitors should take care in wet weather. The reservoir visible from the viewpoint forms part of the Idukki hydroelectric project, with the Idukki Arch Dam, Cheruthoni Dam and Kulamavu Dam together creating the reservoir system. The surrounding district is characterised by wooded valleys, high ranges, plantations and numerous scenic and nature-based attractions. Calvary Mount therefore offers a combination of landscape, spirituality and local heritage in a relatively compact hilltop setting. For travellers exploring Idukki, the viewpoint provides an opportunity to appreciate the scale of the reservoir and the rugged Western Ghats terrain while also experiencing a site of continuing religious importance

🚆 Railway: Aluva Railway Station — approximately 110–120 km; Kottayam is not the principal nearest railway access cited by Kerala Tourism for the Idukki high-range area.

✈️ Airport: Cochin International Airport — approximately 110–120 km, depending on the route.

🚌 Bus: Calvary Mount is accessible by road from Idukki and the surrounding high-range towns. Kerala Tourism places the site about 8 km from Idukki on the Kattappana route; the final approach to the hilltop includes a walk along the ridge and viewing areas.

🏨 Stay: Accommodation is available in the wider Idukki and Calvary Mount area, including hotels, resorts and homestays. Kerala Tourism lists accommodation properties at Calvary Mount itself.

✅ Notes: Calvary Mount is both a scenic viewpoint and Christian pilgrimage centre. During Lent, the site is used for the Way of the Cross. The hilltop is reached by road followed by short walks along the ridge. The approach road is steep in places, and visitors should exercise care during wet weather. Sunrise and sunset can offer attractive light, but weather conditions and visibility vary.
