## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Bolgatty Palace, set on Bolgatty Island in Kochi, is a historic Dutch palace built in 1744 and one of the oldest surviving Dutch palaces outside the Netherlands. Originally constructed by a Dutch trader, the property later came under British control and was used as accommodation for British governors until India’s independence. In 1976, the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) took over the property and converted it into a heritage hotel, allowing the historic building to continue as a functioning hospitality destination. The palace stands within an approximately eight-acre landscaped property overlooking Lake Vembanad and the waterways of Kochi. Its architecture retains distinctive Dutch characteristics, including tiled roofs, wood-framed windows, strong pillars, spacious halls and broad verandas, while the surrounding lawns and mature trees contribute to its quiet island setting. The wider resort complex has developed into a significant leisure and events destination, incorporating accommodation, a nine-hole golf course established in 1925, the Bolgatty Event Centre and the Kochi International Marina. The waterfront location also provides opportunities to experience Kochi’s maritime landscape. KTDC lists boating in the backwaters, birdwatching, morning and evening walks, observing traditional fishing activities and watching ships entering Kochi port among the activities available at the property. Availability of individual activities may depend on operating conditions and arrangements at the resort. The island’s setting provides a different perspective on Kochi, where historic architecture, backwater scenery, port activity and greenery coexist within the urban environment. Visitors staying at the property can choose from palace rooms and other accommodation categories within the resort, while the grounds also accommodate events, conferences and leisure facilities. The palace itself is not presented as a conventional museum; instead, it functions as a heritage property in which the historic building forms part of a contemporary resort. Its importance lies in the continuity of the site, linking Kochi’s Dutch and British colonial history with the city’s present-day tourism and maritime character. For travellers interested in architecture and heritage, Bolgatty Palace offers an opportunity to experience a surviving 18th-century Dutch building while exploring an island landscape closely connected with Kochi’s waterways and port. Its historic fabric, landscaped grounds, waterfront setting and range of recreational facilities make it a distinctive heritage destination within Kochi
