The Bioresources Nature Park at Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) Sub Centre, Nilambur, is a unique educational eco-tourism destination in Malappuram district, Kerala, dedicated to showcasing plant diversity, biodiversity conservation, and ecological awareness. Developed as a living conservation and nature education space, the park allows visitors to explore different groups of plants and understand their ecological importance through specially designed thematic sections. Spread across around 12 hectares within the KFRI Nilambur campus, the Bioresources Nature Park was created to conserve and display diverse plant resources, including lower groups of plants such as algae, bryophytes, and pteridophytes, along with plants adapted to specialized ecological conditions. One of the major attractions of the park is its scientifically arranged plant collections that demonstrate different ecological adaptations. The xerophyte section features plants such as cacti and succulents that survive in dry environments, while the hydrophyte section highlights aquatic plants adapted to water-based habitats. The park also includes collections of medicinal plants, ornamental plants such as orchids, and species of conservation importance, including endemic, rare, endangered, and threatened plants. Designed with landscaped pathways and informative displays, the Bioresources Nature Park provides an interactive learning experience for students, researchers, nature enthusiasts, and tourists interested in botany, forestry, and environmental conservation. The peaceful green surroundings of Nilambur, known for its forests and historic teak plantations, make the park an ideal destination for combining education with nature exploration. Located near the famous Teak Museum, the park forms an important part of Nilambur’s eco-tourism attractions and offers visitors an opportunity to understand Kerala’s rich plant biodiversity in a well-maintained natural setting. The Bioresources Nature Park is especially suitable for school excursions, family visits, botanical studies, and travellers seeking unique offbeat places in Malappuram. Visitors can enjoy short nature walks, observe diverse plant collections, and learn about sustainable forestry and biodiversity conservation. The best time to visit is during the cooler months and morning hours when the weather is comfortable for walking and outdoor exploration. Overall, the Bioresources Nature Park at KFRI Nilambur is a valuable eco-tourism and educational attraction that highlights Kerala’s incredible plant diversity while promoting awareness about conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.
