About this place

Bekal’s dramatic coastline, with the Arabian Sea meeting broad sandy beaches and the imposing laterite walls of Bekal Fort, provides a striking setting for exploring the coastal landscape by water. Bekal Fort is the largest fort in Kerala and occupies about 40 acres on a headland overlooking the sea, with its distinctive keyhole-shaped plan, massive ramparts, observation tower, water tank and southern tunnel reflecting its historic defensive purpose. The fort dates to the 17th century and is closely associated with the history of the Keladi Nayakas and the later Mysorean and British periods. From the shoreline, the fort forms an impressive backdrop against the Arabian Sea, while its elevated observation points provide broad views of the surrounding coast. Boating and watersports are part of the wider tourism offering in Kasaragod, although organised speedboat rides are more clearly documented at nearby Chandragiri, where the Chandragiri Boat Club offers speedboat rides, cruises and trips to nearby islands. Bekal itself is better known for its shallow beach, beach park and the heritage landscape surrounding the fort. Visitors interested in a speedboat experience can therefore combine a Bekal Fort and beach visit with an organised ride in the wider Kasaragod waterways, rather than assuming that a permanent speedboat service operates directly from Bekal Beach. Chandragiri River, around 12 km from Bekal, provides a contrasting setting, with riverbanks, palm groves, islands and views towards the Arabian Sea. The wider district also includes Valiyaparamba backwaters and other waterways where boating and nature-based experiences are available. For visitors who prefer coastal sightseeing, Bekal Beach offers a relaxed setting for walks and views of the fort, while the surrounding region provides opportunities for kayaking, houseboat cruises and other water-based activities depending on current operator availability. Sea-based watersports in Kerala are generally concentrated in the October-to-March period, when coastal conditions are more favourable, but rides can be suspended during rough seas, strong tides or weather warnings. Participants should use recognised operators, wear life jackets and follow crew instructions throughout any organised boat ride. A water-based outing in the Bekal region is best treated as an opportunity to appreciate the relationship between Kasaragod’s historic fortifications, beaches, rivers and backwaters. Combining the fort with an organised boat or speedboat experience elsewhere in the district creates a varied itinerary that brings together heritage and landscape without overstating the availability of a dedicated speedboat service directly at Bekal Beach.

🚆 Railway: Kanhangad Railway Station – approximately 10 km from Bekal Fort Beach; Kasaragod Railway Station is approximately 16 km away.

✈️ Airport: Mangaluru International Airport – approximately 80 km from Bekal according to the Kasaragod District Administration; Kannur International Airport is another option at approximately 112 km from Kasaragod town.

🚌 Bus: Regular buses connect Bekal with Kasaragod and Kanhangad. Bekal Fort Beach is served by buses from both towns.

🏨 Stay: Accommodation is available around Bekal, including resorts, hotels, homestays and other tourism properties. BRDC also lists tented camping accommodation in the beach area.

✅ Notes: A dedicated, regularly scheduled speedboat service directly from Bekal Beach should not be assumed. BRDC officially lists speedboat rides at Chandragiri Boat Club, approximately 12 km from Bekal, while Bekal Beach is primarily promoted for recreation and views of Bekal Fort. Sea-based watersports are generally most suitable from October to March and may be suspended during rough weather or sea conditions. Confirm current boat availability and boarding location before booking.
