## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Kayaking in the wider Bekal area offers a quieter way to experience the waterways and coastal landscapes of Kasaragod while complementing a visit to the region’s best-known heritage monument, Bekal Fort. The 17th-century fort occupies about 40 acres on a laterite headland overlooking the Arabian Sea and is one of Kerala’s largest and best-preserved forts. Its massive walls, observation tower, defensive structures and distinctive keyhole-shaped plan create a dramatic backdrop to the surrounding coastline. Kayaking is available in the broader Bekal and Kasaragod region, although routes and launch points are generally associated with local waterways and organised watersports rather than a permanently designated open-sea kayaking course directly beside the fort. Kerala Tourism lists kayaking among the water-based activities offered in Kasaragod and highlights kayaking through mangrove environments as one of the district’s nature-oriented experiences. The district also features recognised operators offering kayaking and other watersports, while organised events such as the Bekal Beach Festival have included kayaking among their water-based activities. Depending on the route and operator, a kayaking outing can provide views of coastal vegetation, fishing activity, waterways, beaches and the wider landscape of northern Kerala. Sheltered backwaters and mangrove-lined channels can offer a more controlled environment than exposed coastal waters, making route selection and prevailing conditions important considerations for beginners. Participants should receive appropriate paddling and safety instructions before setting out and use the life jackets and other equipment supplied by the operator. Conditions can change with tides, wind, rainfall and sea state, and coastal activities may be suspended during rough weather or official warnings. The experience is particularly suited to visitors who prefer a slower form of water recreation, allowing time to observe the surrounding landscape and photograph the coast without the speed associated with motorised watersports. A kayaking session can also be combined with a visit to Bekal Fort, where the elevated ramparts provide extensive views over the Arabian Sea and nearby beach. The wider Bekal region includes Kappil Beach, Pallikere Beach and other coastal attractions, as well as village landscapes and waterways that reflect the traditional relationship between Kasaragod communities and the sea. Kerala Tourism identifies October to March as the main season for most sea-based watersports, although kayaking on sheltered waterways may follow different local operating schedules. Visitors should confirm the current launch point, route, weather conditions and operator arrangements before booking. Rather than presenting kayaking at Bekal as a guaranteed open-sea activity immediately beside the fort, it is best experienced as part of the wider network of organised water and nature activities around Bekal and Kasaragod, with the historic fort providing an exceptional heritage setting for the overall visit.
