About this event

The Beemapally Uroos is an annual religious festival held at Beemapally Dargah Shareef in Thiruvananthapuram and is also popularly known as the Chandanakkudam Mahotsavam. The festival commemorates the death anniversaries of Sayyidhathunissa Beema Beevi and her son, Ashaikhu Sayidushaheed Maheen Aboobaker, whose tombs are located at the dargah. Beema Beevi is deeply revered by devotees, and the shrine attracts pilgrims and visitors from different parts of Kerala and from different religious communities. The Uroos begins with the ceremonial hoisting of the festival flag in the Islamic month of Jama dul Akbar and traditionally continues for 11 days. One of its defining observances is the offering of chandanakkudams, earthen pots filled with coins and covered with sandalwood paste. Devotees decorate the pots with flowers and incense and bring them to the dargah as expressions of faith and reverence. This distinctive offering gives the festival its popular name and creates one of its most recognizable sights. Religious observances, devotional music, traditional performances and processions form part of the festival programme, while the dargah is illuminated and decorated during the celebrations. Kerala Tourism specifically notes traditional art forms such as duffmuttu and Daharamuttu among the cultural features associated with the festival. The final day includes a ceremonial procession featuring the festival flag from Beema Beevi’s grave. Beemapally Dargah Shareef is itself an important pilgrimage centre in Thiruvananthapuram, with a distinctive pink exterior and the tombs of Beema Beevi and her son forming the spiritual focus of the site. Traditions surrounding Beema Beevi’s life, spiritual influence and healing powers are preserved through local belief and oral history, while the shrine continues to welcome devotees of different backgrounds. The Uroos therefore brings together religious observance, pilgrimage, traditional arts and community participation within the cultural landscape of Kerala’s capital. The festival is listed in Kerala Tourism’s official festival directory, and the 2026–27 Kerala Tourism Digital Event Calendar places the next edition in January 2027. The exact dates are determined according to the Islamic calendar and local religious traditions and should be confirmed with the shrine authorities before planning a visit.
