## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Aryankavu is an important Ayyappa pilgrimage centre in Kollam district and is home to the Aryankavu Sree Dharma Sastha Temple, one of the five major temples in Kerala associated with Lord Ayyappa. The shrine is located amid forested hills near the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border and follows Tamil ritual traditions, with Ayyappa worshipped here as a young deity. During the Mandala–Makaravilakku pilgrimage season, which forms the principal pilgrimage period at Sabarimala, Aryankavu becomes an important point of passage for devotees travelling through the eastern part of Kerala. The locality around the temple and highway accommodates the seasonal movement of pilgrims, while religious institutions and public agencies make arrangements to support devotees during the busy pilgrimage period. Food and other pilgrim-support services are an established part of the wider Sabarimala pilgrimage network. The Travancore Devaswom Board’s official Sabarimala facilities include annadanam at designated pilgrimage locations and arrangements at important stopover centres, reflecting the longstanding tradition of providing food to devotees. Aryankavu’s importance, however, should not be confused with the principal Sabarimala annadanam facilities at Pampa, Nilakkal and Sannidhanam. The Aryankavu temple itself has a distinctive religious identity. The official Sabarimala portal identifies it as one of Kerala’s five important Ayyappa temples and notes that its major festivals include Pandiyan Mudippu, Trikkalyanam and Kumbhabhishekam. The temple’s location along the Thiruvananthapuram–Tenkasi highway also makes it accessible to pilgrims travelling between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. During the pilgrimage season, visitors can experience the devotional atmosphere associated with Ayyappa worship, including temple rituals, pilgrim activity and traditional observances. The surrounding forested landscape adds to the character of the pilgrimage centre, while the nearby settlement provides basic services for travellers. The idea of a formally organised “Ayyappa Pilgrim Reception at Aryankavu Bazaar” with a dedicated programme, large-scale volunteer reception, temporary rest areas and a specified set of food and medical services should not be treated as a separately established annual event. Instead, visitors should regard Aryankavu as a pilgrimage centre where seasonal pilgrim-support arrangements may operate according to the requirements of each pilgrimage season. Exact food-distribution facilities, timings and other services can change, so pilgrims should confirm current arrangements locally. The temple remains the principal attraction, offering visitors an opportunity to experience one of the traditional centres of Ayyappa worship in Kerala and an important part of the wider pilgrimage landscape connecting Aryankavu with other Sastha temples and Sabarimala.
