## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Attukal Pongala is the principal annual festival of Attukal Bhagavathy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram and one of Kerala’s most distinctive women-centred religious observances. The ten-day festival begins in the Malayalam months of Makaram–Kumbham, generally February or March, with the Karthika star, and culminates in the Pongala offering on the auspicious Pooram star, which coincides with the full moon according to the temple tradition. The ritual is dedicated to Attukal Bhagavathy, whom temple and Kerala Tourism traditions identify with Kannaki, the central figure of the Tamil epic Silappathikaram. During Pongala, women devotees prepare the offering in earthen pots over individual hearths in the open, using rice, jaggery and coconut, with plantain also included in the traditional preparation. The temple priest gives the signal at the prescribed auspicious time for the hearths to be lit, after which thousands of devotees begin cooking their offerings simultaneously. The ritual concludes later in the day with priests sprinkling holy water over the prepared offerings, after which they are considered ready to be offered to the Goddess. The scale of the gathering has made Attukal Pongala internationally known. Guinness World Records records the participation of 2.5 million women at the festival on 10 March 2009 as the largest gathering of women, while the temple trust records earlier participation of 1.5 million in 1997. The ritual area extends well beyond the temple itself: the temple authorities state that roads, open spaces, houses and commercial premises within roughly a seven-kilometre radius become part of the temporary Pongala observance. The festival programme also includes the recitation of Kannaki Charitam, bhajans, musical programmes, traditional performances and other temple activities. Kuthiyottam, a ritual involving boys below 12 who undertake a prescribed period of discipline, and Thalappoli, in which young girls participate with ceremonial offerings, are among the associated observances. Attukal Pongala is therefore not simply a large public gathering but a structured religious tradition in which cooking, prayer, ritual discipline and collective participation are closely integrated. The festival transforms large parts of Thiruvananthapuram into a temporary sacred space and demonstrates the continuing importance of women’s devotional participation in Kerala’s religious culture.
