Athletics Meet Thenmala

Athletics Meet Thenmala is a district track and field meet on the adventure lawn at Thenmala, in eastern Kollam. Athletes run, jump, and throw. Long jump, high jump, shot put, discus, and javelin are the kinds of events a meet of this sort programmes. They explain what track and field means. They are not a start sheet until the organisers publish one. You may find a shorter programme, or a different order, on the day.

District means athletes drawn on a district basis rather than an open town jog. It is not a fun run you enter by standing at the edge. Thenmala Adventure Lawn is the ground named for it. Thenmala's adventure zone of walkways and trails is a different visit. The lawn may be a picnic slope without lanes, a kerb, or a throwing cage. Do not arrive in spikes expecting a synthetic track. A forest trail is not the race course unless the meet says so. If you cannot see lanes or a marked throwing sector, ask before you warm up as if the national layout were painted on the grass.

October is the month for the meet. Jumps and throws need a dry enough surface. Rain on a slope changes the take-off. No age group is fixed here, and no qualifying mark is fixed here. Throws are dangerous if people stand in the landing area. A discus or a javelin that has left the hand is not a photo opportunity. If a meet is underway, stay outside the officials' area. Officials will tell you where that line is.

A walkway ticket, a boat, or a park entry is not included. Boating at Thenmala, when it runs, is a separate ticket. The culture zone, the butterfly safari, and the dam are other visits in the same town. They do not put you on the start list.

Aryankavu railway station is about 13 kilometres from Thenmala. Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is about 81 kilometres away. Buses use the Thenmala bus stop. Rooms named in the area are Thenmala Ecoresort, Kandamath Heritage Resort, and Thenmala Heritage. A room is not a competitor's pass.

The adventure lawn is not a stadium with a synthetic oval. Lanes, a kerb, and a throwing cage may all be absent. If you cannot see them, ask an official before you warm up as if they were painted on the grass. Long jump, high jump, shot put, discus, and javelin explain the kind of meet this is. The start list, the ages, and the qualifying marks are unpublished until the organisers print them. October rain on a slope is a reason to check the day before. A ticket for a walkway, a boat, or a park does not put your name on that list. Thenmala's bus stop and the hotels, Thenmala Ecoresort, Kandamath Heritage Resort, and Thenmala Heritage, get you as far as the town. The gate, if the lawn is behind it that day, is a separate question.

District athletes are invited on a district basis. An open jog around the lawn is not the meet. Throws need a clear landing area. A discus or a javelin is not a moment to stand in the sector for a photograph. If officials have marked a line, stay on the spectator side of it. The adventure zone's trails are a different visit on a different day, even when they start near the same town.

Ask who may compete, which events are on, and whether the lawn is behind the ecotourism gate that day. If the gate is the only way in, you need whatever entry the zone asks for, and that entry still may not let you throw. October is the season. It is not a meet every morning.
