About this place
Athirappilly Waterfalls is Kerala’s largest and one of its most famous waterfalls, located on the Chalakudy River in Athirappilly Panchayat of Thrissur district. The waterfall drops about 80 feet over a rocky escarpment at the entrance to the Sholayar forest ranges, creating a dramatic landscape surrounded by dense greenery. The Chalakudy River originates in the Western Ghats before flowing towards Athirappilly, where the river cascades over the falls and continues downstream through the forested landscape. Athirappilly is widely known as the “Niagara of India” and is a major nature tourism destination in Kerala. Visitors can follow the designated pathways towards viewpoints and the lower area of the waterfall, where the scale and force of the falling water can be appreciated from different perspectives. The surrounding forests are part of a biologically rich landscape and support diverse flora and fauna, including several species of hornbills. The Athirappilly–Vazhachal region is particularly significant for birdwatching, with four species of South Indian hornbills recorded in the area. Vazhachal Waterfalls, located less than 5 km from Athirappilly, can be combined with a visit to the main falls and offers a contrasting landscape where water flows over a rocky riverbed surrounded by forest. The broader area is also associated with the Sholayar forest range and provides opportunities for nature walks, photography, birdwatching and sightseeing. The appearance and volume of Athirappilly change with rainfall and seasonal water flow, with the waterfall generally becoming especially powerful during and after the monsoon. Visitors should use designated access paths and viewing areas because the terrain around waterfalls and river rocks can be slippery. The surrounding forest environment also means visitors should respect local regulations and avoid entering restricted areas. Athirappilly is suitable for families, nature lovers, photographers and travellers seeking to experience one of Kerala’s most recognizable natural attractions. The nearby Vazhachal Falls and surrounding forest landscape make the destination particularly suitable for a combined day of waterfall and nature sightseeing. Rather than being primarily a trekking destination, Athirappilly is best experienced through its established visitor paths, viewpoints and forest surroundings, allowing travellers to appreciate the waterfall while exploring one of the scenic natural areas of the Chalakudy River basin.
