About this event
Athachamayam is a grand cultural procession held in Thrippunithura, Ernakulam district, on Atham, the first day of the traditional ten-day Onam celebrations in Kerala. The festival has strong historical associations with the former Kingdom of Cochin, when Thrippunithura served as the royal headquarters and the Maharaja of Cochin traditionally travelled with his entourage to meet his subjects. The royal procession was discontinued in 1949 following the formation of the Thiru-Kochi state and was revived as a public celebration in 1961, when Onam became a state-wide festival. Today, Athachamayam retains the character of a colourful cultural procession rather than a royal ceremony, bringing together Kerala’s folk arts, traditional music, decorated floats and caparisoned elephants. Performances representing different regional traditions of Kerala form an important part of the procession, accompanied by percussion ensembles and other musical groups. The visual character of the event is enhanced by traditional costumes, colourful tableaux and decorated elephants, creating a large public celebration that connects contemporary Onam festivities with the historical identity of Thrippunithura. The procession now begins and concludes at Atham Nagar near the High School Ground, rather than at Hill Palace as in the earlier royal tradition. Kerala Tourism also describes Athachamayam as a symbol of religious harmony, reflecting the participation and interaction of communities associated with the historic royal celebration. The event is rooted in the cultural traditions of the Malayalam month of Chingam and is held according to the Atham asterism, meaning that its Gregorian date changes each year. In 2026, Athachamayam is scheduled for August 16, marking the beginning of that year's Onam celebrations. The procession provides an opportunity to encounter a wide range of Kerala's folk performance traditions in a single public setting, while the historic surroundings of Thrippunithura add to its cultural context. Stories about the origins and significance of Athachamayam include several historical accounts and local traditions, including associations with the military and ceremonial history of the Cochin kingdom; these should be understood within the broader folklore and historical tradition surrounding the festival. The modern celebration is primarily a cultural public event and does not reproduce the former royal ceremony in its original form. Visitors can experience traditional music, folk performances, processional pageantry and the festive atmosphere associated with the opening of Onam.
