About this event

Traditional Nadaswaram and Thavil music forms part of the ceremonial soundscape of Aryankavu Sree Dharma Sastha Temple, an important Ayyappa shrine in eastern Kollam. The temple is one of Kerala’s five major Sastha temples and is situated in a forested setting near the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border. Its worship follows distinctive Tamil traditions, and traditional instrumental music accompanies various temple rituals, processions and festival observances. The nadaswaram, a powerful double-reed wind instrument, and the thavil, its traditional percussion accompaniment, are deeply associated with South Indian temple ceremonies and are used to mark important ritual moments. At Aryankavu, such music contributes to the devotional atmosphere during major occasions, including the temple’s annual festivals and special celebrations. The temple’s important festival traditions include Pandiyan Mudippu, Thiru Kalyanam and Kumbhabhishekam, with Thiru Kalyanam being a particularly distinctive celebration in which the divine marriage of Sastha is ceremonially observed. During festival periods, devotees gather for special poojas, processions and other religious observances, while traditional music and percussion accompany the ceremonies. The combination of nadaswaram, thavil, temple rituals and the natural surroundings gives the celebrations a distinctive cultural character rooted in the musical traditions of South Indian temples. Visitors interested in Kerala’s traditional performing arts can experience this music as part of the wider religious atmosphere rather than as a standalone concert. The performances are primarily connected with temple worship and festival customs, so their availability and timing depend on the temple’s ritual schedule. Aryankavu’s location in the Western Ghats further adds to the experience, with the shrine surrounded by forests and located along an important route connecting Kerala with Tamil Nadu. The temple also forms part of the wider pilgrimage tradition associated with Ayyappa worship and receives increased numbers of devotees during the Mandala–Makaravilakku season. For cultural travellers, the traditional temple music provides an opportunity to observe how instrumental performance, ritual and community participation remain closely connected in Kerala’s religious heritage. Visitors should approach the ceremonies respectfully and follow the temple’s customs and instructions, particularly during major festivals when the shrine can become crowded.
