About this event
Aryankavu Hill Marathon is listed as a half-marathon route on the hill road at Aryankavu, in eastern Kollam. A half marathon is a measured run of 21.1 kilometres. It is not the full marathon of 42.2 kilometres, and this listing does not say the course is a forest trail. In a normal road half marathon, runners wear a bib, start together, follow a marked course, and finish against a clock. Aid stations, a timing chip, age groups, and a medal are common at organised races. This listing does not say which of those Aryankavu will have. The only published line is the distance type and the place: a half marathon on the Aryankavu hill road. January is a month label in a directory, not a confirmed morning.
That matters because the road is a working ghat, not a closed stadium. Aryankavu is a village on National Highway 744, in the Shencottah gap of the Western Ghats, where Kollam meets Tamil Nadu. The highway climbs through forest beside the Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary, with tight bends and a long drop off the hillside. The Kollam–Sengottai railway uses the same pass, with tunnels and viaducts, and the station sits in the village itself. A road race here would need marshals, a published map, and a time when traffic is held. None of that is attached to this name. No club, entry fee, flag-off, or registration page has been published.
Kollam already has a separate, real half marathon. The Desinganad Backwaters Marathon starts at Ashramam Ground in Kollam city and publishes its own 21.1 kilometre category, with its own fee and clock. Aryankavu Hill Marathon is not that race. Do not carry the Kollam city’s start time or medal across to this ghat.
The pass is famous for a different reason. The Aryankavu Sastha Temple, one of the five main Sastha temples of Kerala, stands by the highway. The deity is Ayyappa as a youth, and the shrine sits below the road, with eighteen steps. Temple entry follows the temple’s own rules, including the restriction on women between the ages of 10 and 50. Those rules belong to the shrine. They are not a dress code for a road run, and this listing is not a temple festival. During the Mandala pilgrimage season the highway is busy with Ayyappa devotees travelling toward Sabarimala. A directory month of January falls inside that busy season. It is not, by itself, a reason to treat the highway as a race course.
What a runner can still picture is the shape of the day if a club later confirms the event. Twenty-one kilometres on this gradient is a hard road, slower than a flat city half marathon, and first-timers often walk the steeper bends. The work is a paced start, a marked line, water if the organiser puts it out, and a finish. Shoes with grip and a light shirt matter more than formal clothes. Nothing in the listing says the road is plastic-free, that parking is arranged, or that a baggage tent exists. The railway station and the interstate bus stand are both in the village, so a confirmed race would be a day trip, with ordinary lodges toward Thenmala rather than a race village.
For anyone searching for a half marathon in Kollam, a hill run at Aryankavu, or a race on the Sengottai ghat, this listing should be read carefully. It names a real pass and a clear distance. It does not yet name a race you can enter. Ask for an organiser, a date, and a course map before you travel. If none appears, do not start up the Aryankavu highway at dawn because a calendar box says January.

✅ Notes: Aryankavu Hill Marathon is a directory listing for a half-marathon route on the Aryankavu hill road, National Highway 744. No organiser, date, fee, start time, or course map is published. January is only a month label. It is not the Desinganad Backwaters Marathon at Ashramam Ground in Kollam city. The Aryankavu Sastha Temple is a separate place on the same highway.
