## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Aranmula Valla Sadya, also known as Aranmula Vallasadya, is a traditional ritual feast held at the Sree Parthasarathy Temple in Aranmula, Pathanamthitta district, Kerala. Closely connected with the temple, the Pamba River and the sacred Palliyodams, or traditional snake boats, the feast is an important part of Aranmula’s religious and cultural heritage. Valla Sadya is offered as a vazhipadu, or devotional offering, to Lord Parthasarathy, the presiding deity of the temple, and traditionally involves serving the oarsmen of the Palliyodams who arrive at the temple as part of the ceremonial observances. The feast is distinguished by its extensive vegetarian spread of traditional Kerala dishes served on plantain leaves. Kerala Tourism describes the meal as featuring more than 60 varieties of food, with different preparations including parippu, pulissery, kaalan, avial, thoran, erissery, koottukari, pachadi, kichadi, mezhukku puratti and pickles. The food is not the only feature that makes Aranmula Valla Sadya culturally significant; traditional Vanchippattu, or boat songs, form an integral part of the ceremony. When the Palliyodam crews arrive, they participate in customary rituals and sing devotional boat songs connected with Lord Parthasarathy. During the feast, the oarsmen traditionally request different dishes through the rhythm and lyrics of Vanchippattu, creating a distinctive combination of devotional music, communal dining and ritual observance. This relationship between the temple, the river, the Palliyodams and the feast reflects the living cultural traditions of central Kerala. Aranmula Valla Sadya is therefore more than a conventional Kerala sadya or food festival; it is a religious and community tradition in which food, worship, music and the heritage of the snake boats are closely connected. The feast takes place during the Malayalam calendar period associated with the Onam season, and Kerala Tourism identifies it as an annual tradition at the Aranmula Sree Parthasarathy Temple. The exact dates and arrangements vary according to the annual calendar and temple programme, so visitors planning to experience the Valla Sadya should check the latest information from the relevant authorities and organisers. Aranmula itself is a heritage village in Pathanamthitta situated on the banks of the Pamba River and is also known for the Aranmula Kannadi, the Parthasarathy Temple and the traditional Aranmula Vallamkali. These cultural attractions make the village an important destination for travellers interested in Kerala heritage, religious tourism, traditional arts and local customs. For visitors, experiencing Aranmula Valla Sadya provides an opportunity to observe a ceremonial tradition in which the preparation and serving of food are connected with devotional practices and community participation. The Palliyodams and Vanchippattu add an important dimension to the occasion, linking the feast with the historic boat culture of Aranmula. Travellers interested in photography, Kerala cuisine, temple traditions, cultural tourism and the heritage of Pathanamthitta may find the event particularly relevant, while visitors should remain respectful of temple customs and follow any participation guidelines in force. Aranmula Valla Sadya remains an important expression of Kerala’s religious and culinary heritage, bringing together traditional vegetarian food, devotional offerings, boat songs, sacred vessels and community participation in the historic setting of Aranmula.
