About this event

The Aranmula Uthrittathi Vallamkali, widely known as the Aranmula Boat Race, is one of Kerala’s oldest and most revered traditional boat races, held on the Pamba River at the heritage village of Aranmula in Pathanamthitta district. Closely associated with the rituals and traditions of the Aranmula Sree Parthasarathy Temple, the event takes place annually on the day of the Uthrittathi asterism in the Malayalam month of Chingam and forms an important part of the region’s Onam celebrations. The race combines sporting competition with religious observance, giving it a distinctive character among Kerala’s many vallamkali events. The boats used at Aranmula are the Palliyodams, special snake boats dedicated to Lord Parthasarathy and distinguished by their larger and taller structure. They are associated with the temple and the villages, or karas, that participate in its traditions. During the event, teams of rowers move the elaborately decorated boats along the Pamba while singing traditional Vanchippattu, creating a powerful combination of coordinated rowing, music and ritual. Aranmula has its own repertoire of boat songs, including Kuchelavritham, Bheeshmaparvam and Santhanagopalam, traditionally rendered in the Eastern Vanchippattu style. The event is connected with the legend of the Thiruvonathoni, the ceremonial boat that carries offerings for the Thiruvonam feast at the temple. According to tradition, local snake boats came to the aid of the Thiruvonathoni when it was attacked during its journey, and the annual water procession commemorates this story of community protection and devotion. The race itself is regarded as an offering to Lord Krishna, the presiding deity of the Aranmula temple, and the boats and rowers are closely connected with the temple’s religious practices. The surrounding riverbanks become gathering places for large numbers of spectators, while the decorated Palliyodams, traditional songs and coordinated rowing create a distinctive cultural spectacle. The event also forms part of a wider cycle of Aranmula traditions, including the Valla Sadya, a ceremonial feast associated with the Palliyodams and their rowers. Aranmula Boat Race therefore represents both a competitive sporting tradition and a living expression of Kerala’s religious, social and cultural heritage. Its continuing observance demonstrates the close relationship between the Pamba River, the Aranmula temple and the communities that have preserved these traditions across generations.
