Anchal Mappila Paattu Night is a concert of Mappila songs at the town hall in Anchal, Kollam. Mappila paattu is the Malayalam song tradition of the Mappila Muslim community. The songs have their own metres, and the words carry stories of faith, love, and history in that tradition. The evening is a concert. It is not a temple rite, and it is not a church feast. You come to sit and listen.

Accompaniment, when it is used, is often a hand drum that marks the metre. One drum, several drums, or another instrument is a choice for that night. Do not arrive expecting a particular orchestra. The singers are local singers. No touring bill is attached, and no guest name is attached. You come for the songs. If a notice later names a singer, that notice is the bill. Until then, the town hall evening is enough.

The concert is on the last Friday of the month. The town hall is also used for meetings, school functions, and weddings, so a Friday can already be taken. A closed hall with a wedding banner is not a cancelled concert you can still enter. It is a different booking. The evening is for listening. It is not a fair, and it is not a procession through the market. There is no street route to follow, and no food court is part of the description.

The town hall is the place to ask for. Do not look for an open ground. Seating, if the hall sets it out, is whatever chairs the hall has. No ticket price is stated. Entry may be free, or the people presenting the night may charge. You will know when you ask.

Come to listen. The metres of Mappila paattu are the point, and a hand drum, if one is used, is there to mark them. You will not be given a song list in advance, because no touring bill is attached. The last Friday can disappear under a wedding or a school function. Look at the hall, not at the calendar, on the week you mean to go. Anchal's bus stand is the stop in town. Punalur station is about 14 kilometres off. Hotel Atlantis and Archana Hotel are useful only if you need a bed. Ask who is singing and whether the door is free or paid. If the hall is dark and booked for something else, the concert is not that night.

The concert is not a fair and not a procession. There is no route through the market to follow, and no food court attached. You are there for the songs of the Mappila Muslim community, in Malayalam, with whatever accompaniment that night uses. One drum is enough if that is what the singers brought. Several drums would also fit. Neither is guaranteed.

Ask at Anchal Town Hall, or with the people presenting the night, which Friday is booked, who is singing, and whether entry is free or paid. The last Friday is the day this concert is looked for. The other Fridays of the month are not automatically the same programme, and a month of dates is not a nightly show.
