## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Alathiyur Hanuman Temple Festival is the annual festival of Sree Alathiyur Perumthrikovil, popularly known as Alathiyur Hanuman Temple, at Alathiyur near Tirur in Malappuram district, not Kozhikode district. The temple is dedicated principally to Sree Rama, while Hanuman occupies a particularly prominent place in the shrine and is the reason the temple is popularly known as Hanuman Kavu. Kerala Tourism describes the temple as a revered spiritual centre with a long traditional history and notes its distinctive arrangement in which the Hanuman shrine is positioned beside that of Rama. According to temple tradition, Hanuman is depicted leaning forward as though attentively listening to Rama’s instructions before undertaking his journey to Lanka, giving the shrine a distinctive connection with the Ramayana. The temple’s principal annual festival is the Thiruvona Utsavam, celebrated for three days on the Pooradam, Uthradam and Thiruvonam star days in the Malayalam month of Thulam, generally falling in October or November. Kerala Tourism’s festival information lists it as an annual three-day traditional religious festival. The celebrations include special temple worship and cultural programmes, with traditional Kerala performing arts and music forming part of the festival programme. Documented festival programmes have included Kathakali, Ottanthullal, Thayambakam, Panchavadyam, Melam, drama, dance and musical performances. The temple also observes other important occasions, including Ramanavami and Hanuman Jayanti, while the Malayalam month of Karkidakam, traditionally regarded as Ramayana month, attracts many devotees for worship and Ramayana-related observances. One of the temple’s distinctive devotional practices is associated with a long granite structure symbolising Hanuman’s legendary leap across the sea; devotees traditionally leap over the stone as an act of faith. The temple’s principal offering is aval, or flattened rice, and kadali plantain is also associated with worship at the shrine. Administered under the Malabar Devaswom Board through its temple administration, Alathiyur remains an active pilgrimage centre as well as a site of cultural heritage. The festival brings together religious observance, traditional performance and community participation in a setting closely connected with Kerala’s Ramayana traditions. Visitors should remember that this is an active temple and follow the prescribed dress, entry and worship regulations. The combination of Rama and Hanuman worship, distinctive temple traditions and the three-day Thiruvona Utsavam makes Alathiyur an important religious and cultural destination in Malappuram district.
