Alappuzha, popularly known as the “Venice of the East,” is celebrated for its intricate network of lakes, canals, lagoons and rivers, with a traditional Kerala houseboat providing one of the most distinctive ways to experience this backwater landscape. A day-long cruise takes visitors through tranquil waterways bordered by coconut palms, paddy fields, waterwayside homes and villages, offering an intimate view of the region’s distinctive rural character. The traditional houseboat, or kettuvallam, evolved from the cargo boats once used to transport rice and other goods through Kerala’s waterways. Built using traditional techniques involving wooden planks and coir, modern versions have been adapted for tourism with accommodation and onboard facilities while retaining elements of the original boat design. During a cruise, the changing scenery reveals the close relationship between water and everyday life in Alappuzha, with fishing, farming, boat transport and coir-related activities forming part of the cultural landscape. The waterways also provide access to the wider Kuttanad region, often called the Rice Bowl of Kerala, where extensive paddy cultivation takes place on reclaimed land, including areas lying below sea level.
