About this place
Agasthyakoodam Trek is one of Kerala's most renowned high-altitude trekking experiences, taking adventurers through the pristine forests of the Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve in the southern Western Ghats. Organized and regulated by the Kerala Forest Department, the trek offers a rare opportunity to explore one of India's richest biodiversity landscapes while following strict conservation guidelines within a protected forest ecosystem. Rising to an elevation of approximately 1,868 metres above sea level, Agasthyakoodam is the second-highest peak in Kerala and is revered for both its ecological significance and spiritual heritage. The mountain is named after Sage Agastya, one of the revered sages in Hindu tradition, and the summit features a small stone shrine dedicated to him, making the destination significant to both trekkers and pilgrims. Recognized as part of the UNESCO-designated Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve, the region is celebrated for its exceptional diversity of endemic plants, medicinal herbs, birds, butterflies, reptiles, and wildlife that thrive within the evergreen forests of the Western Ghats. The Agasthyakoodam Trek is conducted as a challenging three-day journey covering approximately 50 kilometres on a round trip and is suitable only for physically fit participants due to its demanding terrain, steep climbs, rocky forest trails, stream crossings, and long walking distances. The trek begins at the Bonacaud Forest Picket Station near Thiruvananthapuram, where participants complete verification procedures before entering the reserve under the guidance of authorized forest staff. On the first day, trekkers cover approximately 17 to 20 kilometres through dense tropical forests to reach the Athirumala Base Camp, the designated overnight halt maintained by the Forest Department. The route passes through pristine wilderness, offering opportunities to observe native vegetation, giant trees, bamboo groves, forest streams, and a wide variety of birds and butterflies, while occasional sightings of larger wildlife such as elephants, gaur, deer, or other animals remain possible but cannot be guaranteed as these species roam freely in their natural habitat. The second day is considered the most demanding stage of the expedition, involving a steep seven-kilometre ascent from Athirumala Base Camp to the Agasthyakoodam summit. The climb rewards trekkers with sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges and forests before they descend back to Athirumala for another overnight stay. On the third day, participants retrace the forest trail from Athirumala back to the Bonacaud checkpoint, completing the trekking circuit. Food and accommodation during the trek are arranged by the Kerala Forest Department at the base camp as part of the officially managed trekking programme. Because the trek passes through an ecologically sensitive protected area, visitors must follow strict environmental regulations, including restrictions on plastic, littering, and activities that may disturb wildlife or damage the fragile ecosystem. Entry is regulated through a permit system, and access is typically limited to a designated trekking season each year to balance visitor experience with conservation objectives. The Agasthyakoodam Trek attracts experienced trekkers, nature enthusiasts, wildlife photographers, botanists, and eco-tourists seeking an immersive wilderness adventure in one of South India's most significant biodiversity hotspots. Beyond its physical challenge, the journey offers an opportunity to experience the remarkable ecological wealth and cultural heritage of the Agasthyamalai landscape while promoting responsible and sustainable nature tourism. Official trekking schedules, permit availability, booking procedures, eligibility requirements, participant limits, safety guidelines, and seasonal operational details are announced by the Kerala Forest Department for each trekking season and should be checked before planning the journey.
