About this place

Achencoil Pilgrim Base Stay is a night in a guest house at Achencoil, the forest temple settlement of Achankovil on the edge of Kollam and Pathanamthitta. Achencoil is another spelling of Achankovil. People stay here before they continue toward Sabarimala. This is the forest settlement. It is not the Achankovil point nearer Pathanapuram, and it is not a stop on the lower plains. If a map drops you in the town version, you are in the wrong place.

The Dharma Sastha temple is a halt associated with the Sabarimala pilgrimage. In the Mandala season, through the winter months, pilgrims move along forest routes and temple halts toward the main shrine. November to January overlaps that season, which is why a base stay is spoken of then. The stay is a bed before the next stage. It is not a booked pilgrimage package. It is not a temple-run lodge, and it is not a resort with a programme of outings. Darshan, if you go to the temple, is separate from the room.

Rooms might be dormitory beds or separate rooms. The house will say which it has. Food might or might not be served. Do not arrive hungry on the assumption of a dining hall. The house sets the charge. Nothing here quotes a rate, because no rate is published with the stay. Ask when you enquire, and ask what the rate covers.

The road in is a ghat road. Rain, a fallen tree, or a local restriction can close a stretch. Check it with someone who has driven it recently. A dry report from Punalur does not mean the last kilometres are open. Temple hours and entry rules are the temple's. They are not part of the room, and a night in the guest house does not set them.

Forest around the settlement is not a marked picnic park. If you see a wild animal, keep your distance. Do not feed it, and do not chase it. Otters are looked for on the river here in another visit. A guest-house bed is not that watch, and it is not the raft trip.

Punalur railway station is about 40 kilometres from the Achankovil Dharma Sastha Temple. Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is about 136 kilometres away. Buses serve Achankovil when the road allows them. Rooms named along the way, in Punalur rather than in the forest, are A One Hotel, Hotel Panacea Ventures, and Shaji Hotel. They are a town stay before the ghat. They are not the pilgrim base. The base is the guest house at the settlement, if that house is receiving people.

The forest Achankovil is a long way past Punalur. The station is about 40 kilometres short of the Dharma Sastha temple, and the airport is about 136 kilometres away. A One Hotel, Hotel Panacea Ventures, and Shaji Hotel are Punalur rooms for the night before the ghat, not the pilgrim house. On the hill, ask the house whether the bed is a dormitory or a separate room, whether food is served, and what the charge covers. Temple hours are not included in the bed. The Mandala months are busy with people going on toward Sabarimala. A busy road is not a guarantee that this particular house is receiving guests, or that a fallen tree has not closed the last stretch. Confirm the forest settlement, not the Achankovil nearer Pathanapuram.

Confirm you are going to the forest Achankovil, that a house is receiving guests, and that the road is open. A month inside November to January is the season people travel. It is not a guaranteed bed every night.
