About this event
Achankovil Sree Dharma Sastha Temple is one of Kerala’s five important temples dedicated to Lord Ayyappa and occupies a distinctive place in the state’s Sastha worship tradition. Located on the banks of the Achankovil River amid the forested landscape of eastern Kollam, the temple is traditionally associated with Lord Ayyappa in his Grihastha Ashrama form, accompanied by his consorts Poorna and Pushkala. The shrine is also renowned for its traditional belief in the healing power of the sandalwood paste and holy water associated with the deity, particularly in connection with snake-bite lore. The temple’s rituals and festivals have strong Tamil cultural influences, reflecting the historical connections between the region and neighbouring Tamil Nadu. Achankovil also receives pilgrims during the wider Sabarimala pilgrimage season, and devotees visit the shrine to offer prayers and seek the blessings of Dharma Sastha. The 41-day Mandala observance is specifically associated with the Sabarimala pilgrimage, rather than being a separately documented 41-day festival called “Achankovil Mandala Pooja.” During the Mandala season, devotees undertaking Ayyappa pilgrimage may therefore include Achankovil in their religious journey, but the temple has its own distinct annual festival calendar. According to the official Sabarimala portal, the principal festival at Achankovil is celebrated from the first to the tenth day of the Malayalam month of Dhanu, corresponding approximately to December–January. The festival traditions, together with daily temple worship, form an important part of the religious life of this forest shrine. Achankovil’s setting also contributes to its character: the temple lies within a richly wooded landscape, and the approach includes natural attractions such as Manalar and Kumbhavurutty waterfalls. The temple is regarded as one of the important Sastha centres connected with the broader Ayyappa pilgrimage tradition, alongside Sabarimala, Aryankavu and Kulathupuzha. Visitors interested in Kerala’s temple heritage can experience here a combination of traditional worship, Ayyappa devotion, Tamil-influenced ritual customs and the tranquil environment of the Western Ghats. Pilgrims should remember that temple worship follows established customs and that festival dates and special programmes are determined according to the Malayalam calendar. Achankovil is therefore best experienced as a historic forest temple and active pilgrimage centre, rather than as a standalone 41-day Mandala festival destination.
