About this event
Achankovil Sree Dharma Sastha Temple, located in the forested eastern region of Kollam district, is one of Kerala’s five important temples dedicated to Lord Dharma Sastha and occupies a distinctive place in the state’s Ayyappa pilgrimage tradition. Here, Lord Ayyappa is worshipped in the grihastha form, accompanied by his consorts Poorna and Pushkala, unlike the celibate form traditionally associated with Sabarimala. According to temple tradition, the idol was consecrated by Parasurama, and the shrine is particularly renowned for its association with the worship and healing lore surrounding poisonous snakebites. The idol of Dharma Sastha is depicted holding sandalwood paste and holy water, known locally as chandan and theertham, which devotees traditionally regard as having protective and medicinal significance. The temple’s rituals and customs also bear strong Tamil cultural influences, reflecting the historical character of this forest region bordering Tamil Nadu. Achankovil is an established pilgrimage destination during the Sabarimala Mandala season, when devotees visiting the major Sastha temples also come here to offer prayers. The principal annual festival of the temple is held for ten days, from the first to the tenth day of the Malayalam month of Dhanu, corresponding to December–January. The festival is marked by traditional temple rituals and attracts devotees to the shrine and its surrounding sacred precincts. The temple’s religious importance is complemented by its natural setting, with the shrine situated amid the forests of the Western Ghats and close to the Achankovil River. The journey through this forested landscape is also associated with natural attractions such as Manalar and Kumbhavurutty waterfalls, which form part of the wider cultural and ecological character of the region. The temple complex contains other deities connected with the Dharma Sastha tradition, while its longstanding rituals preserve customs distinctive to Achankovil. Rather than being identified with the Makaravilakku festival for which Sabarimala is particularly renowned, Achankovil is best known for its own Dhanu annual festival and its continuing role in the wider Ayyappa pilgrimage network. Its combination of ancient temple traditions, distinctive Sastha worship, forest surroundings and regional cultural practices makes Achankovil an important religious and cultural destination in southern Kerala.
