About this event

Achankovil Sastha Temple Festival is the principal annual festival of the historic Achankovil Dharmasastha Temple in the forested eastern part of Kollam district, Kerala. Situated on the banks of the Achankovil River, the temple is one of the important Sastha shrines associated with the Ayyappa tradition and has distinctive ritual customs with strong Tamil cultural influences. Here, Lord Ayyappa is worshipped as Dharmasastha in the Grihastha Ashrama form, accompanied by his consorts Poorna and Pushkala. According to temple tradition, the idol is believed to have been installed by Parasurama. The temple’s most important annual festival is observed from the first to the tenth day of the Malayalam month of Dhanu, corresponding approximately to December–January, making it an important devotional occasion during the wider Sabarimala pilgrimage season. The festival brings devotees to the remote temple for special worship and traditional rituals associated with Dharmasastha. Achankovil is particularly renowned for its distinctive belief concerning the treatment of poisonous snake bites: the idol holds sandalwood paste and sacred water, which are traditionally regarded by devotees as having healing properties. This long-standing belief forms an important part of the shrine’s identity and attracts people seeking the deity’s protection from snakebite. The festival also reflects the temple’s unique ritual heritage, shaped by traditions that connect Kerala and Tamil cultural practices. The surrounding landscape contributes significantly to the character of the celebration. Located amid dense forest and near the Achankovil River, the temple provides a setting markedly different from the larger urban temples of Kerala. The approach to Achankovil also passes through scenic forest landscapes and is associated with other natural attractions, including the Manalar and Kumbhavurutty waterfalls. During the festival period, devotional activity and pilgrim visits bring greater energy to this otherwise tranquil forest settlement. For those interested in Ayyappa worship, Sastha temples in Kerala, traditional temple festivals and the religious heritage of the Western Ghats region, the Achankovil Sastha Temple Festival offers an opportunity to experience a distinctive pilgrimage tradition. The celebration is primarily religious, with temple rituals and worship at its centre, while the forest setting and Tamil-influenced customs add to its cultural character.
