## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Achankovil River Otter Watch is a quiet look for smooth-coated otters on the riverbank at the forest Achankovil, also called Achencoil, on the Kollam and Pathanamthitta edge. The river here runs by the Dharma Sastha temple halt. This is the forest settlement on the way people travel toward Sabarimala. It is not the Achankovil near Pathanapuram, and it is not a town tank. The other Achankovil will not show you this bank.

The smooth-coated otter, Lutrogale perspicillata, is the otter of Kerala rivers. A sighting is a glimpse of a wild animal. There is no painted trail, no hide, and no promise you will see one. Otters may use a stretch at night, or at an hour when you are not there. You should be ready to see nothing and still have done the visit properly, because the visit is the looking, not a guaranteed animal.

Watch from the bank, quietly, and from a distance. Do not enter the water to get closer. Do not use bait, feed them, call them, or chase them along the bank. If an otter leaves, let it leave. Do not handle a cub, and do not poke a resting place. Eddies, rock shelves, and the line where water meets plants are where you look. A splash can be a fish. It can be an otter. It can be nothing you can name. Keep still either way.

November to February is the season for the watch. It is not an official peak month, and it is not a claim that otters are easier then. The bank may be forest, temple, or private land. Ask before you settle on a rock. The approach is a ghat road. Rain, a fallen tree, or a local restriction can close it. This watch is not the raft safari, and it is not the whitewater trip on the same river. Do not follow otters in a boat. A raft moving after an animal is harassment, not watching.

Punalur railway station is about 40 kilometres from the Achankovil Dharma Sastha Temple. Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is about 136 kilometres away. Buses serve Achankovil when the road is open. Rooms named in Punalur, before the ghat, are A One Hotel, Hotel Panacea Ventures, and Shaji Hotel. They are not a camp on the bank.

Go prepared to see nothing. That is a normal result, and it is better than a disturbed animal. The bank you want may be temple land, forest, or a private edge. The person who can say yes is there, not in Punalur. The station is about 40 kilometres short of the temple, the airport about 136. Use A One Hotel, Hotel Panacea Ventures, or Shaji Hotel if you need a town bed, then take the ghat only when the road is open. November to February is the season people choose. It is not a promise about the hour otters use. If you are also hoping for a raft, book that as its own trip, and do not steer it after an otter. Distance and quiet are the whole method.

Lutrogale perspicillata is a wild animal with its own hours. Eddies and rock shelves are where you look, and a splash may be a fish. Let an otter leave. A cub is not a photograph to be handled, and a resting place is not a burrow to poke. The raft trips on this river are separate. Following an animal in one of them is not watching.

Ask whether you may stand on the bank you have in mind. If the answer is no, choose another place or leave. The otter does not owe you an appearance.
