About this place
Punalur Hanging Bridge, also known as the Punalur Suspension Bridge, is a historic landmark spanning the Kallada River in the centre of Punalur town in Kollam district, Kerala. Built during the reign of Travancore Maharaja Ayilyam Thirunal Rama Varma, construction began in 1871 and the bridge was completed in 1877 under the supervision of Scottish engineer Albert Henry. Measuring about 400 feet in length and 20 feet in width, the bridge is an important example of nineteenth-century engineering, combining iron, wood and masonry in a distinctive suspension structure. The bridge is suspended from large iron chains anchored through four substantial wells, while its deck consists of wooden planks supported by iron bars. This unusual construction gives the bridge its characteristic appearance and gentle movement when pedestrians cross it. Originally designed to facilitate movement and trade across the Kallada River, the structure also had a practical role in protecting agricultural areas from wild animals that could enter from the surrounding forested region. Its construction contributed to Punalur's development as an important commercial and transport centre connecting the eastern parts of Kollam with neighbouring Tamil Nadu. Today, the Punalur Hanging Bridge is primarily a heritage attraction and is restricted to pedestrian use, while a modern concrete bridge carries regular vehicular traffic. The Kerala Department of Archaeology declared the historic suspension bridge a protected monument in 1990, recognising its architectural and historical importance. Restoration work was subsequently undertaken, and the bridge was reopened to the public in 2014. Walking across the wooden deck provides visitors with an opportunity to experience the distinctive movement of a traditional suspension bridge while looking towards the Kallada River below. The surrounding area also offers a contrasting view of Punalur, where the historic structure stands amid an active modern town. Kerala Tourism particularly highlights the atmosphere around the bridge after dark, when surrounding illumination gives the structure a distinctive appearance and the river creates a quieter backdrop beneath the busy town. Beyond its architectural appeal, Punalur Hanging Bridge represents an important chapter in the region's industrial and transportation history. Punalur Municipality identifies the bridge as a major symbol of the town's architectural heritage, while the wider town developed as an important centre for trade, industry and transport. For visitors exploring Kollam tourism, the bridge offers a combination of heritage, engineering and riverside scenery rather than being simply a crossing point. Its nineteenth-century design, association with Travancore history, protected-monument status and location beside the Kallada River make it one of Punalur's defining attractions. The Punalur Hanging Bridge therefore provides a direct way to experience the engineering heritage of historic Kerala while appreciating the changing landscape of a town that grew around trade, industry and transportation.
